Apart from the different RAW formats there does actually seem to be a move towards system standards in digital photography (APS sensors for example). When we consider how many different film formats, special cassettes etc have disappeared over the years it seems to me that digital is getting a lot closer, and a lot faster, to a standard than film ever did. Leica wrote shortly after Photokina that they are attempting to keep the M-sensor size as large as possible (1,37 factor) and that the shutter assembly and type will have to be completely different from the present M design. The rangefinder and top deck will however remain virtually unchanged. There will be, comparatively, a "lot" of room left over in the M body e.g no film cassette and no take up spool - about 25 cubic centimetres of space each - for microelectronics quite considerable.
