It is large, heavy, and not especially sharp until F4 or so; it is susceptible to flare. If you are looking for 40's Hollywood soft focus effects then wide open this lens is perfect. If you are looking for a good fast lens, then move to the Nikon 50mm F1.4, the Canon 50mm F1.4, or either a Zeiss 50mm F1.5 or one of the Russian Jupiter 50 F1.5. Any of that set will provide a better image wide open. Unless you really need the speed: you have already pushed the film to 6400 and you are still hitting shutter speeds that do not work for you, then drop to a F2 lens. Starting with Canon 50mm F1.8 near $100 there are many choices that will provide wonderful imagery. On the other hand, if you are looking for very limited DOF effects, go up to a 85-90 F2 lens and use one of those. Last, if speed in a 50 is really what you want, then step up to either the current Summilux, the last generation Summilux, or the C/V Nokton. In a lengthy fashion, what I am saying is that the 50mm Canon F1.2 is a boutique lens that you would add to your stable for it's unique finger print. You would typically not want this lens as your main walk around lens. And yes, I do own one but very rarely use it.
