Subject: [Leica] 50 mm lens choice help requested.

Simon,
I have the first generation Summicron R and the Noctilux. I also took a
moment to review what Erwin said about both lenses. First, the
Summicron R first generation is a better lens than the Summicron II for
the M system which means that it is better than the rigid or the Dual
Range which is very high praise indeed.

My sample for the R is what moved me out of the Canon system for
anything but fill flash macro and some telephoto sports work. Even wide
open the first generation Summicron is a stunning lens.

Parsing Erwin's comments, with the exception of a little less coma, the
new lens isn't any better than the old lens except that it was probably
less expensive to manufacture (my comment).

Regarding the Noctilux, it is a very fine lens, but the really fine
details will be better rendered by the Summicron as well as much better
micro-contrast rendition.

If you will be shooting subjects with extreme contrast and/or shooting
through Perspex then the Noctilux may be the better choice. If you will
be shooting subjects that have normal contrast and/or fine to very fine
detail then the Summicron will be the better choice. Last, the
Summicron will give a more vivid color palette albeit by a small amount.
