er... a couple of those meters you mentioned do read out in EV. You transfer
the EV to the little calc wheel to find the f stop and shutterspeed, and
transfer it to your Leica.  Sekonic Studio Deluxe for one.  As Mark pointed
out, so do the Gossens, and my Shepherd does too.

I had the distinct impression, though it has been a while since I used one,
that the Pentax spot meter reports an EV too, and you have to set it on the
calculator wheel to derive the f stop and shutterspeed.

A friend owned a zone-modified Pentax, and did not like the fact that it
didn't match his Hassy EV scale.

I didn't think they had many direct reading F stop/shutterspeed meters until
the advent of the digital meters.  That's why we movie film shooters  used
the Spectra meter, because you could push a slide in to represent the ASA,
and it gave you the f stop directly based on 1/50th of a second.
