Hi Simon,
It sure helps, particularly when working off a tripod. But any small "carry
in bag" level bought at a camera store or hardware shop will work.

I've got one that's about the size of a cigarette in my bag and place it on
top of the camera hot shoe and it works fine. Much cheaper also.
