It isn't always possible, but frequently there is some > combination of position and angle that provides natural fill. Thanks for the suggestion. I did not notice the shadows while I was shooting. I'm not sure what I could have done - the wall nearest to him was wood-panelled and I didn't feel comfortable asking the administering officer to move Erik around.
