Yes, I have to admit I was very surprised when I played
around with a friend's "digitoy" Nikon Coolpix 995 last
week.

The first thing I did was switch off the beep and the
autofocus and... my, a _very_ quiet camera. Pity about
the 3 MP sensor (wake me up when they reach 16 MP!),
extra-extra-short battery life and the fact that the lens
"winks" when you take a shot - a lethal problem for candid
work.

>that said, the leica is pretty darn quiet too

Yeah, it's not bad, especially when compared to a Nikon F2.

;?)

But have you had a chance to use a Konica Hexar in silent
mode? Amazing thing. Move the camera away from your face
and you cannot hear it, let alone your subjects.

Just wish Leica would make something as quiet. But like I
said in my original post, I gave up waiting years ago.
