Logan...

I can't speak for the others out there, but I can say from my own
experience that the Noctilux f/1.0 1st series is remarkable and is
rapidly becoming my *only* lens of choice. I have 6 Leica lenses of
varying age:

- - 1937 Leitz Wetzlar Xenon 50mm f/1.5 - S [serial: 375xxx]
- - 1954 Leitz Wetzlar Summaron 35mm f/3.5 - M [serial: 1181xxx]
- - 1954 Leitz Wetzlar Summicron 50mm f/2.0 - M collapsible [serial:
1232xxx]
- - 1951 Leitz Wetzlar Hektor 135mm f/4.5 - S [serial: 851xxx]
- - 1956 Leitz Wetzlar Hektor 135mm f/4.5 - M [serial: 1383xxx]
- - 1975 Leitz Canada Noctilux 50mm f/1.0 - M [serial: 2749xxx]

None of the other lenses I currently own or have ever used [of any make]
can remotely match the Noctilux for flare control, buttery smooth bokeh,
pinpoint depth of field, and speed. As others have stated, it has a
completely unique fingerprint.

Simply an astounding lens, well worth the price and extra weight.

/Mitch

References:

I wonder what are the alternatives (I know some of you would say there
are
no alternatives ;-)) to the Noctilux? The one I know:

Noctilux f1.2
Noctilux f1 1st serie (with separate hood)
Noctilux f1 2nd serie
Hexanon 50 f1.2 that comes only with the Hexar RF limited (availability?
Price?)
?? 60 f1.2 limited serie
