The meter needle and the follow pointer do project out into the picture
area.   However, when you press the light button, it illuminates a section
of the viewfinder outside the picture area where you can see the needle
inside the follow pointer.

The follow pointer on the SL/2 is different than the SL because of this

The SL/2 has a meter that is more sensitive than all other Leitz/Leica
cameras except the R8 and the M5.

BTW, I've had my SL/2 for more than 23 years and have never needed the
illuminated meter needle feature.
