John,

Thanks to you and all those who helped me in my quest. My conclusion is
that the front markings noted in my original query should be added to those
already described by Stephen Gandy for the pre-ASPH 35mm Summicron (no
criticism intended.)

After Leica was reorganized in 1988, lenses and the red dot on M6s changed
from Leitz to Leica. The last (Mandler) non-asph version of summicron 35mm
was made from 1979 - 1997. Serial numbers: aprox 2 970 000 to 3 731 000. I
hope this helps.

Can anyone help me with a difficult identification? There is a 35mm
non-ASPH Summicron on eBay, which seems to match Stephen Gandy's description
of the latest non-ASPH, escept for one feature. According to Stephen's
description, the front should either be inscribed LEITZ LENS MADE IN CANADA
or LEICA. The one pictured on eBay says LEITZ. Could this be another
variant of the latest non-ASPH?
