Subject: Re: [Leica] Touchy Subjects List for Web Site

I admire anyone who wants to take on the subject of a FAQ for the LUG =
group. The problem is that the reason the subjects are touchy is that =
there is not a real consensus about most of the items on the "touchy =
subject list."

For example lets take (gasp) filters. What we are really talking about =
is the use of UV filters to protect the front lens element. You are not =
going to reach a real consensus on this unless the group goes through =
another member purge. There is no way you are going to convince someone =
who has routinely placed a UV filter on their lens for the past 30 years =
that they should not do that. And then you find that the most outspoken =
opponents to the use of UV filters use polarizing filters nearly all of =
the time.

Bokeh --- well first you have the folks that think, intuitively, that it =
is there on most Leica lenses --- then you have a group that doesn't =
think it exists --- and yet another group that wants to measure and =
quantify it.

As regards Oddmund: Wow. After the last time the LUG shot a bunch of =
members (those were the little blackmailing SOBs), I went back into the =
digest and reviewed about every third digest from the first two years to =
see if people were really that nasty early-on. Yeah, they were. Some =
are even nastier now. Some went to the Nikon list and spread the =
nastiness, then repented (or got kicked-off of the list) and came back =
to the LUG to blather on. But Oddmund stands out as the "Jimmy Carter" =
of the LUG in the sense that he had his standards, ideals, and =
implemented them and to heck with the consequences. As far as I can =
read into what happened, Oddmund eventually went with a point and shoot =
and into the abyss of Greenpeace. But he knew what he stood for...and =
was not shy about correcting others. Actually, a rather admirable =
person.

Anyway, a lot of the basic camera questions can be answered on Stephen =
Gandy's pages. Opinionated --- yes, but I note that he is willing to =
change his statements (based upon my comments about the Olympus Pen F). =
Unfortunately, Mr. Gandy is no longer a group participant.

Anyway good luck. And to think that someone wants to start a list which =
is essentially about "what is Leica art."
