It is exactly this kind of thing (a new approach, a mixture of techniques) that gets people noticed. I'll even go so far as to suggest that he probably could live with being recognized as someone who brought a fresh, new approach to wedding photography. Not to mention the fact that his pictures will probably be loved by those who commission him, more than the standard posed stuff. Besides, wedding photography can probably pay for his private skateboard projects. Make a niche, get recognized, charge accordingly. I wouldn't give up on trying to make him see the benefits.
