Hi Group - Eric makes several good points but I think there's also a bit of marketing involved. My guess is that Leica is probably not aiming the Apo telyt for the typical hobbyist. If you're a pro you have a chance of amortizing expenses like that, or if you're a funded researcher and if your research requires a $4K lens, then just go buy one. For now, I'm content with the more mundane optics I have.
