Philippe,
The distance from the trunk of each individual beech to the tip of each
branch at the the cut face is about 70cm approx right now, according to
my tape measure, but, if you trim it back in August, it apparently
doesn't encourage growth. However, cutting or pruning it during the
dormant season will promote a far more vigorous growth. Our hedge
cutting man comes in August, restores it to shape, and disappears until
the following August.
I understand that hornbeam is very similar, but don't go on what we do
over here as our climate is slightly different to your one which
probably has slightly hotter summers and colder winters. That may change
the optimum trimming and pruning times. Remember that we inherited the
hedge here so didn't grow it, and are only the maintainers!
Keep safe and don't cut your fingers off when trimming your hedge.
