It's probably a literacy problem. Isn't the literacy level in the US 
pretty poor for a first world country compared to others?  A higher 
proportion of people in America just can't read. That's probably why 
when you walk down the city streets of Europe - Dublin or Barcelona for 
instance - wearing a Leica around your neck, the more literate thieves 
in Europe recognise the writing, whip it off you, and scarper toute 
suite. In Dublin, sages say some people would steal the eye out of your 
head and then come back for the lashes.
