Hi Aram,

yes I have tried Viewscan and the darned thing still hangs.
I'll hopefully have time tomorrow or over the weekend to check out the 
link that Meino posted.  However, I fear it's hardware-related (the 
viewscan release notes say there can be problems with USB timing on 
faster machines), so I will either have to bring the XP machine back 
upstairs and us it for scanning, try using my macbook or just accept 
that I need to buy a new scanner.
