 From my recollection, the main poisoning problems came out of  
commercial color processing practices.
An area where the industry frustrated most attempts at a more rigorous  
implementation of safety regulations, which would of been beneficial  
to the line workers.
The small operations that I've seen, and it's been many, rarely had  
adequate ventilation, if it had it all. Only two, that I can  
recollect, bothered with an air ionizer.
The ventilation systems I've seen, never had any filtration,or  
scrubbers. It was vented outside, to the surrounding community, much  
like the metal plating industry still does to this day.
