My first statement was simply that I was nostalgic a bit for the old processes but had NO desire to return to the wet darkroom. But, glib comments about carpel tunnel syndrome being the big health threat in the darkroom demonstrate a lack of understanding about the field that is insulting to people who hand souped tens of thousands of rolls of film in poorly ventilated darkrooms. It is a slap to the technicians who fought bean counters to install safety systems to protect them from poisonous fumes and fluids. The tobacco company, pseudo-scientific rebuttal of some folk in other fields getting the same diseases is a silly insult to our understanding of science. Please, enjoy your time in a darkroom. I would never want to discourage you from that thrill and quiet, lone contemplation that is to be found in the darkroom. I treasure the years I spent in improvised and real darkrooms. Please, though, just accept that (especially for those who have worked in the trenches) there are risks and that some of us have outlived the entertainment value of dipping our fingers in rapid fix and dektol. Please revel in the odors. I, for one, will not miss them. And, here I was trying to confine myself more to talking about and posting pictures. ric On Nov 4, 2009, at 9:56 PM, Richard Man wrote: > Don't most photo JOURNALists not do their own darkroom work?
