In most martial arts there is a ranking of learning and capability. Most
if not all consider a black "sash" or belt as a signifier of acceptable
accomplishment: there are intermediate color sashes signifying increasing
levels of capability. In the Tai Chi tradition three years is considered
about the minimum time to learn that acceptable knowledge of the form and
its principles. At this graduation two individuals earned their fifth
degree belt after around twenty years in the discipline.
