In most martial arts there is a ranking of learning and capability. Most if not all consider a black "sash" or belt as a signifier of acceptable accomplishment: there are intermediate color sashes signifying increasing levels of capability. In the Tai Chi tradition three years is considered about the minimum time to learn that acceptable knowledge of the form and its principles. At this graduation two individuals earned their fifth degree belt after around twenty years in the discipline.
