What I do is that I buy online and deliver whatever I require to my friends/relatives who live in the USA/Singapore/Japan (Europe is too expensive), and ask them to bring it with them the next time they visit India. Not only does it save me duty, but usurious courier charges that all online retailers look at as just another profit centre nowadays. The downside is the wait, but that is OK! This does not apply to photographic equipment, which is roughly the same price here as in the USA, but for high duty items, like watches, etc or stuff that has not been released here, like certain toys for the grandkids.
