Down in southern France where I photograph quite a bit, there has been a sudden expansion of vines, despite demand for wine decreasing. The shepherds and their flocks that once crossed the plain near us on their way up to the high pastures in the Alps are slowly disappearing. When Doisneau documented the transhumance (movement of the flocks) in the fifties the animals grazed the scrub under the trees and reduced the risk of forest floor fire-spread. The lack of grazing is that some areas are now more vulnerable than they were previously, particularly near the coast.
