Madama Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini was, for me, particularly poignant. I
spent two years on active duty in the Navy at the naval base at Yokosuka,
Japan. The plot of the opera was all too familiar. The HGO production
featured Jeanette  Pilou as Butterf;y. This is a scanned print; the Epson
film scanner refuses to scan the entire negative, cropping the image at the
top of Butterfly's head:
