The need for speed is drastically reduced with digital sensors.   6400 ISO
with almost all of the newer sensors is perfectly usable with minimal
processing.   Very fast lenses might have a use for their signature or
artistic shallow dof.

For everyday walk around photography even a 5.6 lens would be fine.   Auto
ISO is a real tool that let's the photographer control blur and what is in
focus.   Specifically,  look at Canon's new 600 f11 lens that is getting
good reviews.
