Is the only advantage of pulling off the color filter layer of the sensor
(assuming focus is kept flat via some neutral replacement) increasing the
speed/ISO of the camera?

I was wondering if (and doubting that) any company was able to separate the
individual sensor elements and quadruple the resolution.
