I had the same problem with my father's wedding Rolex, bought in 1948. He
stopped wearing it sometime in the 1970s, and when I wanted to get it
serviced and working 15 years ago, the Rolex dealer here in Chennai said
that they were not allowed to attempt to repair these older watches as per
their contract with Rolex. When I contacted Rolex themselves, they said
they could not help me, and they would not do it either in any of their own
repair centres. However they gave me the contact details of a repair outfit
in London to whom they had sold all their old parts to. They fixed it all
right, and refurbished it at my behest, at a cost of around GBP800. When I
wanted it fixed and serviced again last year, as it had stopped working, I
gave it to a very well regarded 150 year old watch shop here in Chennai,
and they serviced and fixed it for US$25.

Cheers
