Jim,  I would never recommend auto in LR.  I do use the auto button in the
perspective control panel but it only works about 1/2 the time.   The brush
tool especially using the luminosity mask control makes it simple to bring
up or down a tonal range that didn't show the same as you saw when you
pressed the shutter.
