John, your photo is too sophisticated.  From the winners it's clear the
judges were looking for a clear, brightly lit 'pretty' photo of the sea
shore.  This happens.  With this sort of thing the challenge is often
matching the photo to the judges sensibilities or the purpose of the
competition as much as it is about taking a good photo.  I really like your
photo.  It reminda me of some of Lisa Golightly's abstract paintings:
