Thanks for looking.

There are Norwegian names because the Norwegians came here first for
sealing and whaling, followed by the Scots - so you have names like Leith
Harbour, St.Andrews Bay, etc as well! The first organized whaling village,
Grytviken, was set up by this guy, Carl Anton Larsen, who as you can read
was very much more than a pure whaler. I am sure he would have never
started it if he knew the carnage that would eventually take place - a
total of 175k+ whales, and in 1929 or 1930, I forget which, over 30,000
Blue Whales in that one year alone!

Nature recovers pretty fast if left alone, and that is what seems to have
taken place here - the last whaling station was closed in the 1960s. The
only species that has not really recovered, because it is an extremely slow
process, are the whales, and I have my doubts whether they can ever get
back to the pre whaling numbers.
