Yes that?s exactly what I though was going on. Like a pop up viewfinder. 
Does not stop you from taking a pic even though you may be just seeing at 
that point only the middle part. Did it all the time.
By the way I had all kinds of prisms but waist level finders were always my 
main finder. And the pop up magnifier which could pop down again was a main 
reason. That and the light weight.

    Here, let me put it in terms you'll understand.
    
    Remember how you'd pop down that magnifier over the waist-level finder 
of a
    Rollei twin-lens reflex and it would magnify part of the ground glass to
    help you focus but that wouldn't change what field of view actually went 
on
    the film?
