Despite having a car broken into at a parking garage right under Plaza Catalunya a couple of years ago, I have never felt unsafe in Barcelona. You are extremely unlikely to get mugged or otherwise attacked. But there are lots of opportunistic thieves, especially now, when the city is full of tourists. So you do not need steel reinforced straps etc., but you do need to take sensible precautions of the type Lluis describes.
