But in the days of real photographers, film, enlargers and wet trays?

It was pretty well standard practice to lightly burn in the corners for a 
nice added visual effect. True!

Yes sometimes you had the "darkroom nerds"  who deliberately almost made the 
corners black. That was supposed to be "ARTSY!" In reality it was "CRAP!"

So today we have a lens that automatically slightly darkens the corners?? 
"THAT'S COOL MAN!" :-) :-)
