more precise than what Geoff ?
have you given an adequate trial to focus peaking?

so you 1. see better what you are focussing on 2. have a separate 
confirmation of focus  3. avoid focus shift (a biggie when you are wide 
open) 4. benefit from focus peaking for long lenses as you mention below
