My own studies in post heart attack weight loss suggest that exercise burns
calories. Eating stores calories. Eating less calories while burning more
calories results in weight loss. Simple arithmetic. The use of current
software helps greatly in losing weight and reaching fitness goals.
Myfitnesspal.com makes the math self apparent.

Moderate excersize is good but the math isn't as simple as this because not
all calories are metabolized the same way. Sugars are the biggest culprits
but sugar substitutes with zero calories can be far worse (likewise fat
substitutes).

In general (just scratchinng the surface):

avoid consuming products with ingredients a 3rd-grader can't pronounce
fresh is better than processed or modified
hydrogenated oils including partially-hydrogenated should be avoided
grass-fed beef and free-range poultry meat is much better than factory meat
most corn, soy and canola now grown the the western hemisphere is
genetically modified and should be avoided including derivative products
