I was also steeped in the QC aspect of the craft for many many years...working on joint teams (military/Kodak) running extensive sensitometric tests to determine useful film speeds on Special Order "SO" emulsions etc etc...that little number on the box we all took/take for granted. Never ceases to amaze how a craft/trade/profession that took years to master in order to produce a useful, tactile product is now accomplished (or can be) in just hours/minutes/seconds...speaking technically, of course, not necessarily artistically. Requiring fine photographic technique with and in camera. The enlarger was just another camera. The darkroom just another studio. Each process requires fine technique. When I ran a Kodachrome and/or Ektachrome line we had to run tests each day and throughout the day; reading those tests with densitometers; adjusting camera filtration to respond to the chemistry results.
