Thefts and burglaries used to be punishable by death in Britain. You could
be hanged in the late 1700s for stealing as little as 40p. The law was so
widely seen as barbaric and inhumane even by the standards of the time,
that prosecutors back then often charged thieves with stealing 39p worth
of goods or cash to avoid seeing them hanged for what was a minor theft.
Fortunately, we now value human life over property to the extent that such
laws are no longer on the books.
