Sympathies to the people of the US on the awful business at Sandy Hook.

The Guardian has some figures from '07 on world gun murders.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2012/jul/22/gun-homicides-ownership-world-list

Ireland has 8.6 guns per 100 people - mainly shotguns owned by farmers*
Mexico has 15 guns per 100 people
Canada has 30.8 guns per 100 people
The US has 88.8 guns per 100 people.

However:

Ireland has 0.48 gun murders per 100,000 inhabitants
Mexico has 9.97 gun murders per 100,000 inhabitants
Canada has 0.51 gun murders per 100,000 inhabitants
The US of A has 2.97 gun murders per 100,000 inhabitants

*I'd have to say in Ireland's case a significant the number of guns used for
murders are under the control of drug gangs who like killing each other for
fun. Needless to say they're not registered.

Belize has 52.3 gun murders per 100,000 inhabitants so John McAfee may well
have a point, or maybe that's one of the reasons he moved there....
