They're nice, sitting atop the Colorado Plateau which lofts their base to 5,000 feet for starters. The Sierra, on the other hand, start from sea level to the west and 4,000 feet in the basin and range territory to the east. Both are worthy. But Ansel took his passion to the nearby Sierra, to the link with Muir, to the tall trees. You can't complain about his results. Personally I wish he had explored the western foothills a lot more than he did - or at least a lot more than I'm aware of. Driving to Yosemite from the west is a great drive regardless of season. Of course from the east it's impossible in the winter. If Yosemite sat on the Colorado Plateau the valley would be at 9,000 feet and Mt Whitney would be at almost 20,000'! Always something to remember when comparing the Sierra to the Rockies.
