One of our local PD was driving by and I called him over to inform him of a new crime wave :). He said that was not uncommon with McCain signs, and even a few Obama signs had been reported. Anyway, a few days later he drove by again and we talked. I had an SLR with a huge Canon zoom on it - I held it up and said I would crack the case and phone in the leads. We had a good laugh, but -- miraculously, the thefts stopped. Perhaps a neighbor watching and the power of photography unleashed, or so I would like to think.
