So if you had a drum scan at 2400, that would be about a 7x9' print at
300ppi.  A 9' print where (some, certainly not all) photographers could walk
up close with loupes - others would just enjoy the image.

Thanks Frank.

I use an old-in-the tooth Epson Expression 836XL.  It will scan up to
11x17 inches.

It can scan up to 800 SPI and that's fine for printing up to 11x14... 
but the optics, or something else in the scanner, don't render anything
larger very well.

I think that this scanner was really meant for scanning 8.5 x 11 printed
publications.
