If you're feeling ambitious, consider running ZFS under FreeBSD 9.0 which
has quite a few ZFS improvements over the version FreeNAS is based on. No
web GUI, but ZFS is pretty easy to set up and the FreeBSD documentation is
very good. We're running 10 VMWare and Xen servers off a custom
FreeBSD/ZFS storage backend, and it has been very fast and stable.

No experience with Linux/ZFS, so I can't say how it would compare.
