i also have the 35-70, but no focus problems with any focal length or any 
lens.

Vick,

I've had similar focus problems with the 35-70/4 on my R8, especially at the 
35mm setting.   Considerably easier to focus at the 70mm end and it holds 
focus as you zoom back to 35mm, so that's what I do, that is, always focus 
with it at 70 and then zoom to the focal length I want.
