In LR 4.1, by default "apply auto tone adjustments" is checked in 
edit>preferences>presets.  Unchecking allows the tiff to be saved 
without any adjustment.  If it is left checked, then the auto tone 
adjustment makes permanent changes to the tiff file when it is saved in 
the same folder as the raw file, anywhere from subtle to extreme.  
Thanks to all who responded - maybe this will be of benefit to others 
with the same issue.
