You remind me of a friend telling me about taking a workshop with 
Eisenstadt. They were walking outside, and "Eisie" saw his capped lens. 
"Give me that cap," he said, and threw it over his shoulder. I like caps for 
times when the lens needs protection and photos won't happen, like in a 
case.

The only time I use lens caps is shipping lenses to DAG for  adjustment or
if I sell one.   I have a box of them in my closet.
