In the 80s/90s for a given film speed (100asa or 400asa) C41 film was less
sharp when printed than E6 or B&W due to film thickness, has that changed
since then?

Yes that's how it works as film speeds get faster the emulsions gets
thicker. A slower thinner film speed is going to be sharper.
But the 400 films of the 90's match closely the look in terms of grain and
sharpness the 100 speed films of the mid to late 70s when I first started
color printing.
