dear mark,
i agree with you on the quality of american photojournalism.
it's journalism i was talking about and it is truly miserable.

also one should be able to make an observation without having to be an
expert.
one can easily discern if someone is an excellent cook without also being
able to make that item in question.

when it comes to multiple sclerosis neurology, i am truly world class.
and can strut my stuff with the best of them anywhere.

it does not mean i do not know when things are lousy in other sectors or
that i should keep quiet.

recently i asked a New York Times journalist point blank when he was going
to retract his article.
it was incredibly badly written without even basic fact checking.

his defense was that the paper he was quoting was published in a peer
reviewed journal
and so getting the facts right was someone's else's responsibility.
but that journal did not print it in the New York Times. he did.

and he presented other points of view so his job was done.
he didn't actually need to "report" anything that HE found.

now this is consistent with the PHILOSOPHY of the NYT.

see-
http://www.salon.com/2012/01/13/arthur_brisbane_and_selective_stenography/
and
http://publiceditor.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/01/12/should-the-times-be-a-truth-vigilante/

he wrote "I?m looking for reader input on whether and when New York Times
news reporters should challenge ?facts? that are asserted by newsmakers
they write about."

apparently fact-checking makes one a "truth vigilante".

welcome to american journalism!!!!!

i emailed arthur as well about retracting this junky article.
he has yet to write back.

it took me just an hour to do the fact checking that he was supposed to.

read it all here - http://www.flickr.com/photos/scleroplex/6811713204/

as you can see, when it comes to medical fraud, i don't just say one line
and leave it at that.
nor do i let journalists off the hook.

most american journalists nowadays simply engage in CHURNALISM.

as for photojournalism, i wish we had more of it.
one good thing i can say about the boston globe is they still have
photojournalists on staff
and print their output every single day.
i subscribe daily and open the pages in anticipation every morning.

cheers from a "truth vigilante" !
:-))

My hit on the state of quality of American photojournalism differs.
