Hi Herb,

We burned wood for about 15 years, starting in 1967 when we built the house,
but then bought these gas logs. These burn a yellow flame, and look like a
wood fire, but are not very efficient. The ones sold today burn an
efficient, blue flame, and give off much more heat.

Some of the new ones are sold as requiring no vent, but I don't like that.
I have an air intake through the ash pit, and keep the damper open, so the
fumes go up the chimney.

Our main concern was to have a source of heat in the event of an ice storm
with downed power lines. We have "existed" for several days with that
situation.
