I actually use a 2TbTime Capsule from Apple as my router and also as the 
disc for Time Machine.
I think any newer 7200RPM Hard drive would work fine.

I'd use the newest, fastest disc for time machine and relegate the older 
slower ones to secondary backups.
Opinions vary, but personally, I buy by price as they all will fail at some 
point.
