Back on topic, however briefly <g>:
I see my two new external hard drives

came with software bundles that include Carbon Copy Cloner. I've been
reading the online user guide and it looks like it might be what I
need so I'll give it a try.
(I also think these 1.5TB drives have gone up $15 each in the last week or
two.)
