Better said that the current generation of Leica M lenses still work
extremely well wide open but nevertheless are technically better as you stop
them down a little. Whether or not you can achieve that and what other
factors influence your results of course are different things.

The M lens dimensions ultimately are one factor that can constrain their
design/performance nevertheless and one of the reasons that the S lenses
have such phenomenal specifications is that they were able to start with
more volume and design them from the ground up for the S 'middle format'
sensor. Peter Karbe has said on a couple of occasions that these lenses are
optically the best that Leica Camera has ever made without reservation and
can outresolve the current and the next generation sensors in that 30x45mm
size. I still want some ;-)
