Bob, I am in the "no book needed" camp, that is one reason I like Lightroom
so much. I am in the situation you describe--i.e. editing on the laptop and
then transferring to the desktop when I get home--almost every time I
travel, and I see no particular problem--what is the issue you are
struggling with?

FWIW, my procedure is this (based on my recent trip to the Netherlands):

DURING THE TRIP:
1) Create a new LR catalog on the laptop
2) Copy SD card to the computer, import the RAW files as DNGs into the LR
catalog created in step 1
3) Do my edits etc. in Lightroom, just as I do when I am at home--this is
why I frequently post trip pictures while still on the trip.
4) Just before starting the journey home, copy the RAW dump and the LR
library and images onto a USB stick or my iPod. This has the benefit of
providing a backup in case something happens to the laptop during the
voyage, and also providing a transfer medium when I get home.

AT HOME:
5) Connect the transfer medium from step 4 to the iMac and copy the images
to their normal destinations
6) Open LR on the iMac and do a IMPORT FROM CATALOG from the travel catalog.

That's it.

Cheers,
Nathan
